The history of international mathematical co-operation over the last hundred years - from the first international congress in 1897 to plans for the World Mathematical Year 2000 - is a surprisingly compelling story. For reflected in the history of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) is all the strife among world powers, as well as aspirations for co-operation among nations in an increasingly interdependent world. As early as the 1920s, the IMU embraced principles of political neutrality, inviting every national mathematical organisation to join, and this principle of non-discrimination, while sometimes sorely tried, has held the IMU in good stead. A number of issues - the Cold War, the conflict between the Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan, a divided Germany, problems in the emerging nations of Africa - at times led to attempts to influence the IMU Executive Committee in its decisions regarding membership, location of international congresses, committee assignments, handling of protests, and awarding the coveted Fields Medals. Yet throughout, the IMU has sponsored international congresses around the world, and Professor Lehtos gripping story is one of individuals, among them many of the great mathematicians of our century, united in the common purpose of advancing their science, told against the backdrop of world events.

Rolf Nevanlinna (1895-1980) war ein weltberühmter Mathematiker, eine Autorität auf dem Gebiet der Kultur, eine umstrittene politische Gestalt und eine charismatische Persönlichkeit. In allen Phasen seines Lebens waren die Mathematik und die Musik seine Leitsterne. „Man muß sein Leben der Arbeit widmen und nach den erhabenen Welten streben" war sein Motto. Durch die Entwicklung der später nach ihm benannten Nevanlinna-Theorie erlangte er in den 1920er Jahren Weltruf. Seine Affinität zum Dritten Reich brachte ihn zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Finnland in eine politisch sichtbare Position, doch mußte er nach Beendigung des Krieges von seinem Amt als Rektor der Universität Helsinki zurückzutreten. Als Mathematiker war Nevanlinna unbestritten: Er wurde zum Professor der Universität Zürich berufen und zum Präsidenten der Internationalen Mathematischen Union gewählt. In Würdigung seiner Verdienste um die Verbindung von Mathematik und Informatik wurde nach seinem Tod der Rolf-Nevanlinna-Preis gestiftet. Nevanlinna blieb bis zu seinem Lebensende eine einflußreiche Kulturpersönlichkeit und zeichnete sich insbesondere als Sibelius-Spezialist aus. – Professor Olli Lehto (Helsinki), der Autor dieser umfassenden Biographie, kannte Rolf Nevanlinna über viele Jahrzehnte, zunächst als Student, dann als Assistent und schließlich als Kollege. Das Buch gibt tiefgehende Einblicke in das Leben eines genialen Mathematikers und in die wechselvolle Geschichte Finnlands.
